It's because abiword's font rendering breaks when running in a unicode
locale. I started to look at it at one point, but haven't had a lot of
time to track it down. gtkhtml had a similar bug and it ended up being
a tiny diff, but really tricky to find.

The font being shipped by Abiword is not Times New Roman, it's Nimbus
Roman. Times New Roman is not a term which can be used to reply to
fonts other than actual Times New Roman.
