Actually if you patch your 2.96 it's a better compiler than 2.95.1.

Practically everything that fails to build with 2.96, fails to build
because the code wasn't standards conformant, and the older gcc's
passed nonconformant code. Typically you just have to define one or
two preprocessor symbols to bring back the heavily populated
namespaces ("overpopulated", according to the standards), and you're
ok, but there are other places where standards compliance was improved
as well.

And of course if you just hate progress, you can always use the "kgcc"
that comes with redhat 7.

They're probably tired of hearing it. How do you respond to hoardes
of people insisting that an improvement isn't an improvement? I'd
probably consider ignoring it too. Perhaps I should have this time
(I'll know I should have if this turns into a battle).

BTW, the mesa modes in xscreensaver run MUCH faster on redhat 7 than
they did on 6.2. I haven't figured out why yet. It could even be
because of the improvements in the compiler's output, but perhaps it's
more to do with using XFree86 4.x with an 3d video card.
