Using AbiWord for HTML

I'm new to this list.

I want to use AbiWord (version 0.9.6-1) to create and maintain simple HTML
web pages (few graphics, no spinning gifs). I've tried some simple tests
cases and AbiWord seems to save ("save as HTML 4.0") a new .html file OK.
IE5 can display the page.

However, when I try to open (open "All Documents" or open "XHTML") the file
that AbiWord created (or any other html file), I get the message:

AbiWord cannot open C:\Temp\junk.htm. It appears to be a bogus or invalid
document.

I've asked another local AbiWord user (who hasn't tried editing HTML) and he
said "It should work."

Am I doing something especially dumb?

Thanks for any help.
