For #1, you need to change the "normal" template. Go to Format, then Style.
After you make changes, you need to Save As an AbiWord Template. The
"normal" template is in a Templates folder within the AbiWord folder in your
Program Files. I find that to get it to save (so that it changes things the
next time I open AbiWord), I need to click on the already existing template
name "normal." Just typing the name doesn't do the trick.
For #2, you need to edit your AbiWord Profile, which resides in the
AbiSuite folder within Windows. Open it with Notepad when AbiWord is not
running. You can add things to the Custom format that appears towards the
end of the file, like so
DefaultSaveFormat=".rtf"
Then save the Profile. You can change other stuff this way too (I have
Zoom set to Width, instead of 100%). It's not as difficult as it might
appear (then again it might not appear difficult to you at all). I am
"just-a-user" and found tinkering with the Custom format to be quite
exhilarating. If you change some of the default Preferences before looking
at the AW Profile, you'll see more stuff already listed under Custom (I
think!).
