I don't know what your problem with the plugin is, but
I can tell you a few things:
1) You can use AbiWord to convert between different
formats on the command line. To do this, you need to
do:
AbiWord --to=rtf file.sxw
This will convert file.sxw to RTF. Substitute "rtf"
with the extension of whatever format you want to
convert into.
2) AbiWord's OpenOffice importer is crap (I should
know, I wrote it...). If you care about fidelity or
anything of the sort, you shouldn't go this route.
