I've had this problem, but editing the profile has always solved it
instantaneously. It's never been a memory issue (at least for me,
running on P3 or P4 systems with 256MB RAM).

You should probably focus on why your profile is being overwritten.
When I edit Abiword.Profile, I make sure that

1) I'm editing the profile in the .Abisuite directory in my Home
directory, and

2) I'm editing the profile as root if for some reason the editing is
getting overwritten.
