Re: redefinition of my problem, File names and special characters

Hello Mickael

There might be a way to have Abiword handle folders with accented characters, or may be not. The answer might not be in Abiword, but with the Operating System. My message, here, is that I would NOT recommend to use anything above ASCII 127 in file and folder names.

I knew times, when files had to be 8.3 (8 characters for the name, 3 characters for the extension) and a to z, 0 to 9, hyphen or underscore, especially NO space character.

Today, I am not sticking to the 8.3 rule any more, but I am still sticking to the a-z, 0-9, hyphen, underscore, NO space rule.

Even if file names containing spaces and several special characters may be accepted "more or less" in most operating systems nowadays, it is and will always be a source of problems.

Even if you can teach your OS to handle files with accents well in most cases, problems will surely occur when you give your file to someone using a different OS.

That's why I'm preaching since 30 years to stick to ASCII 127 and NO spaces when naming files. Sometimes, it seems that nobody dares to listen.

Just imagine what happens when URLs are made of files containing spaces :
one must call this URL with an ugly %20 instead of the space

Or URLs with # & ? in the file names, these characters have a special meaning in URLs and web browsers will be discombobulated.

Mickael, I'm French too, but I never used accents, umlauts, cédilles, spaces, nor anything out of ASCII 127 in file names. I'm used to do so for more than 30 years. Life is easier that way.
